Introduction To Community Forums on Substance Abuse

History and Purpose of the Community Forums

The Southwest Coalition on Substance Abuse Issues held its first Community Forum 18 years ago.

The purpose of the Forum was to bring individuals, families, and representatives of organizations together with public officials to talk about the problems substance abuse causes in our communities; what is and is not being done by service providers and others to address the problems; and what might help us be more effective.

The first Forums were held in the Joliet area. Over the past few years, as the Southwest Coalition has grown, the Forums have expanded to other communities in Northern Illinois. Last year, Forums were held in New Lenox, Chicago Heights, Kankakee and Rockford. This year, Forums will be held in these communities as well as in Aurora, Forest Park, and the Rogers Park area of Chicago.
